What is an Explainer Video?
An explainer video is a short-form video usually used for marketing or sales purposes that highlights a company’s product, service, or business idea compellingly and efficiently. Most businesses host explainer videos on their landing pages or feature them on the homepage of their website.
Some even use these videos to advertise their product or service on Facebook or other social media websites. It’s short, it’s snappy, it’s engaging, and it can transform the way people connect with a product or service. That’s the power of an explainer video and why it is one of the most effective forms of video marketing content.
It’s a success that’s based on real-world results. A 2020 study into the effectiveness of marketing video strategies found that 84% of consumers said an explainer video convinced them to buy a product or service.
Embedding a compelling explainer video into a company website has been shown to boost conversion rates by up to 80%. It helps to explain why they are now the most popular form of marketing video, the number one choice for nearly three-quarters (73%) of marketers.

Why Short Explainer Videos Like 30-Second Video Work Best
The standout advantages of 30-second explainer videos are fast, bright, and impactful. In an age where attention spans are shrinking and competition for viewers’ focus is fierce, these short videos deliver quick, memorable messages that engage audiences effectively.
Attention Spans Are Limited
The average person’s attention span has dropped to 8 seconds, making it challenging to hold their interest for long. On platforms like Facebook, statistics show that most viewers only watch the first 30 seconds of a video. A short, punchy message aligns perfectly with this viewing behavior, ensuring your content gets seen and remembered.
Instant Impact
A well-crafted 30-second video delivers a message that is:
- Bright and eye-catching: Visually engaging to grab attention immediately.
- Focused: Cuts straight to the core message without unnecessary details.
- Memorable: A clear, concise video reinforces your brand, leaving a strong impression.
Perfect for Brand Awareness and Reinforcement
Short videos are excellent for brand reinforcement when the audience already knows and trusts your business. Whether it's reminding people about a promotion, showcasing a logo, or broadcasting a special announcement, 30 seconds is often all you need to keep your brand top-of-mind.
Supports Other Marketing Efforts
Businesses often use 30-second videos as advert reminders—timely follow-ups to previously published campaigns. These videos can boost visibility for:
- Discounts and special offers
- Event promotions (time, date, place)
- Quick product announcements
Short videos amplify the overall message and create consistency across platforms when integrated with more extensive campaigns.
When 30-Second Videos Work Best
Short videos thrive when:
- Your Audience Knows You: If you already have a loyal customer base, fans, or strong brand recognition, short videos are perfect for staying connected. For example, companies like Apple or Nike can share 30-second content because their audience is invested and eager to listen.
- The Message Is Simple: Quick commercials, straightforward announcements, or reminders are ideal for short videos. There’s no need for lengthy explanations—just clarity and impact.
- Social Media Trends Favor Brevity: Platforms like Instagram Reels, TikTok, and Facebook prioritize short-form content. Thirty-second videos align perfectly with these trends, increasing the chance of higher engagement and shares.
When Short Videos Could Be a Mistake
While short videos are compelling, they’re not always the right solution, especially if your audience doesn’t already know or trust you.
Building Trust Takes Time
If you’re targeting new audiences or launching your first video campaign, 30 seconds might not be enough. You need time to:
- Introduce your business
- Address audience pain points
- Highlight the benefits of your product or service
- Include a compelling call to action
Context Matters
Think of a 30-second video like greeting a friend. It works because the connection already exists. But a stranger needs an introduction, context, and a reason to care about your words. A longer video provides room for storytelling and relationship-building.
Exceptions: When 30 Seconds Is Enough
Occasionally, a short, perfectly crafted message can accomplish everything in under 30 seconds. These rare exceptions require precise scripting, a deep understanding of the target audience, and clear, focused messaging.
Longer Videos for New Audiences
Thirty-second videos work exceptionally well for brand reinforcement, quick announcements, and event promotions—particularly when your audience already knows and trusts you. Nevertheless, if you’re introducing yourself to a new market, longer videos are often necessary to:
- Build trust
- Provide value
- Inspire action
For established brands, short explainer videos are a powerful tool for staying relevant and making an impact. For newcomers, consider 30-second videos as a follow-up, not an introduction. Always let your audience’s familiarity, needs, and message guide the length of your video content.

5 Best Tips For Creating 30-Second Explainer Videos
1. Brevity is Best
- The heart of a 30-second video lies in brevity and clarity: Every word matters, and every second counts. To create a punchy video, stick to 80-100 words. At a natural speaking pace, this word count ensures your video doesn’t feel rushed or cluttered. You must cut out the fluff and focus on your core message.
- Be Direct and Concise: Your script should immediately grab attention, clearly state the problem or message, and offer a solution without tangents. Focus on what the audience needs to hear rather than what you want.
- Simplify Your Ideas: Condense complex ideas into one clear takeaway. For example, focus on the key benefit that resonates most with your audience rather than listing ten benefits. While it can feel challenging, cutting down forces you to deliver a laser-focused, memorable message. After all, viewers are far more likely to fully engage with a short, streamlined video than abandon a longer, wordy one.
2. Use Visuals to Enhance Your Message
A 30-second video doesn’t rely solely on words. You can amplify your message through visuals to save time, evoke emotions, and boost understanding. Combine Narration and Animation: Use visuals to support or replace verbal explanations. Show graphics, data, or visual metaphors that reinforce your message instantly.
- Show, Don’t Tell: If you’re solving a problem, demonstrate it visually. For example, animations can highlight how your product works in just a few seconds.
- Be Entertaining: Short videos thrive on entertainment. Use humor, energy, and dynamic visuals to capture attention and keep viewers engaged. Well-designed visuals add clarity and appeal while ensuring your message lands within 30 seconds.
3. Plan Thoroughly with a Storyboard
Creating a tremendous 30-second video starts with meticulous planning. With such a short time limit, you can’t afford wasted seconds or filler content. A storyboard will help you stay focused and efficient.
- Frame-by-Frame Planning: Storyboards allow you to visualize every video's second and frame. This ensures you’re making the most of every shot while keeping the pacing tight and purposeful.
- Script and Storyboard Synergy: Your script and visuals should work seamlessly together. Each second of narration should be matched with visuals that emphasize and support the key message.
- Cut Ruthlessly: Review your storyboard to identify unnecessary frames or tangential points. If it doesn’t serve the main message, remove it. Every frame should have a job. Planning thoroughly avoids overshooting the 30-second mark or losing focus on your core message.
4. Target the Right Audience
The success of a short explainer video hinges on understanding who you’re speaking to and what they need:
- Solve a Problem: Identify your audience’s pain points and position your product, service, or message as the solution.
- Tailor Your Tone: Match your tone and style to your audience’s preferences. Whether it’s fun and quirky or professional and authoritative, speak their language.
- Focus on Benefits: Instead of overwhelming viewers with features, show how your offering improves their lives or solves a specific issue. By focusing on the audience’s wants and needs, you create a relevant, valuable, and engaging video—even in just 30 seconds.
5. Collaborate with Professionals
While this might sound cheeky, working with an experienced team like Moonb can make a difference. Professional video creators have the expertise to craft the perfect, tight, impactful script that conveys the right message in 30 seconds.
- Design Engaging Visuals: Eye-catching animations, graphics, and visuals complement your message beautifully.

Choosing an Explainer Video Company
Define Your Goals for Choosing an Explainer Video Company
Before you vet different video creation agencies, you must know what you want to achieve. What message are you trying to convey through the video? Who is your target audience? What kind of style do you envision? What is your budget and deadline? Answering these questions will give you a starting point and help you narrow your options.
Experience Matters When Selecting an Explainer Video Company
A video company's experience determines its competence in delivering quality videos. A company that has been in the business for a considerable period will likely have honed its skills and fine-tuned its processes, ensuring a smoother customer experience. Nevertheless, experience alone isn't enough.
You should also examine the company's portfolio to see the range and quality of its work. This will give you a better sense of its creativity and ability to diversify its styles to suit different industries. Remember, your industry's nuances can significantly impact how your video content should be presented.
Client Reviews and Testimonials
Testimonials are powerful tools for assessing a company's reliability and professionalism. They provide insights into the company's work ethic, ability to meet deadlines, customer service quality, and willingness to go the extra mile for clients. Read reviews on independent platforms or ask the company for references if they aren't readily available.
Customization and Personalization
The best explainer videos are tailored to resonate with a specific audience. Look for a company that emphasizes customization and personalization. They should be willing to learn about your brand, understand your unique selling points, and translate these into your video. Companies that use templates or have a one-size-fits-all approach may need help to capture the essence of your brand effectively.
Comprehensive Services
While the focus here is on explainer videos, you may need other types of video content in the future. Selecting a company that provides a broad spectrum of video services will save you the hassle of looking for a new agency each time your video needs to change.
Communication and Collaboration
Clear communication is key throughout the video creation process. Look for a company that values transparency and keeps you in the loop at every stage. They should also be open to your ideas and input. After all, you know your business better than anyone else. The right company will welcome your thoughts and collaborate to bring your vision to life.
Value for Money
While it's important not to compromise on quality, price should also be considered. The most expensive company could be better, and vice versa. You need to ensure you get the best value for your investment. Be cautious of companies offering exceptionally low prices—they may not deliver the desired quality.

A 30-second explainer video does exactly what its name suggests: It explains something in 30 seconds (or thereabouts). These short videos are often animated but can be live-action or a mix of both. Thirty-second explainer videos get straight to the point, helping viewers quickly understand a product, service, or concept. Most importantly, they do this entertainingly, keeping audiences engaged.
Why Use 30-Second Explainer Videos?
The average human attention span is shrinking. People now have shorter attention spans than goldfish. Explainer videos are great at combating our shortening attention spans. Research shows that people will stay engaged with an explainer video for an average of 2 minutes and 54 seconds. That’s nearly three times longer than the typical 30-second video.
